What happens during the month

Rabi al-Awwal (also written Rabi ul Awal, Rabi-ul-Awwal, or Rabbi ul Awwal) is the third month of the Islamic calendar and the month in which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born. In 2026 it runs from around mid-August to mid-September in the UK.

Communities across the UK mark the month in different ways: mosques host seerah lectures and study circles; naat khwani and mehfil-e-naat evenings fill weekend programmes; many towns hold a juloos (also spelled jaloos) — a public procession with salawat and nasheeds; and families gather for milad and shab-e-milad nights. Some communities also refer to 12 Rabi al-Awwal as Barah Wafat. Observance varies between communities and schools of thought, and every event here is listed by its own organiser.
